I found my solution to avoid the exorbitant costs of publishing a book through a publisher. The solution is simple and its free and its called wwww.createspace.com. This is what I did and I now have my book on Amazon in both Kindle and softcover form. The publishers I talked to were going to charge me 3900 and 7500 respectively and that was suppose to involve some kind of promotion and marketing. Well, I have done that on my own as well and while this is going to be a very long process, its sure cheaper doing it this way.
If you want to publish a book and you know how to market it, then you should use the free service Createspace. Its just that simple.

Writing Subtext in a Screenplay
Writing "On the nose" dialog is considered a bad thing when you write a screenplay. Writing exactly what a person thinks or wants to say in a scene is considered boring, run of the mill and amateurish. Instead it is said you should write subtext, which is how people really talk in real life. Well in real life I have found that most people talk both ways. They either say what they mean or they are subtle with their comments, using backhanded was of saying what they really mean and this depends on the kind of person you are talking to more than any other reason. Overuse of subtext in dialog can be more annoying and confuse the audience, therefore a middle ground must be found; a middle ground between the boring on the nose dialog and the overly subtext-ed ways of making a point.
As far as dialog my favorite movie of all time would be both of the Godfather movies. The subtext was just right and the on the nose dialog was necessary in spots. Nothing was over done, or over "fluffed". There was never a dull moment in dialog or action during both of these great movies.
Screenwriting is so difficult and requires so many re-writes because you have to write and then re-write dialog to get it just right. Just how do people really talk? How do the characters in the movie your writing talk? This is the challenge we all have when writing a screenplay.

How bad do some actors want to be an actor in Hollywood
After seeing the horrible movie 50 Shades of Grey I wondered once again how desperate some actors in Hollywood seem to be to grab the brass ring and become a famous or rich actor.
The actress in this movie, Dakota Johnson showed almost her entire body and humiliated herself in a very bad movie and she is the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. I guess she had several meetings with her agent and the producers of this very bad movie and decided that 50 Shades of Grey was going to be her ticket to stardom but the reality is that there is a very good chance that both she and the other actor in the movie have ruined their careers before they even started.
This movie was about as bad a movie as I have ever seen. The story made no sense and you just knew that any normal woman would go running for her life if he ever saw the "play room" the main character in this movie showed her not to mention the legal contract she had to sign to be his submissive in this movie.
The only good thing about this horrible movie was that it ended suddenly and as I left the theater I heard many very bad and accurate comments about how bad this movie was and how happy everybody was that it was finally over.

The problem with Hollywood
When you see as many movies per year as I do you start to recognize repeating trends which include for the most part, how the Hollywood movie machine works.
I just got back from the 3rd movie in the Taken series and overall it was a pretty bad movie. The first Taken was a great movie and it was great because the script was great, the action was great and the father daughter relationship and how he saved her at the end of the movie was also great. The 2nd Taken movie was just average because the producers knew that all they had to do to make a great deal of money was to make another movie where someone is Taken. This is the problem with Hollywood and some of the movies they make - money over quality.
The 3rd movie Taken 3 was just a bad movie. The story made no sense at all, and the plot was so bad they actually had to explain the movie at the end of the movie, showing hidden pieces of action that were not shown before or details that would be impossible for anyone to know. The idea behind this story and the entire plot was insane, downright ridiculous. Why did this happen? Because they knew they had a guarantee of a certain amount of money because of the interest in the first two movies, so they concentrated on all the money they were going to make and completely forgot about the most important thing of all, the screenplay! I have seen this so many times over the years, most especially the Die Hard franchise which had 5 movies in the series, the last one so bad that it was almost impossible to sit through. It's a rare thing that a sequel is better than the original movie and exception to this rule would be The Godfather 2 and Aliens, the sequel to Alien. Godfather 3 was another example of trying to make money over quality because Godfather 3 was not a good movie. This is an ongoing trend for all Franchise movies and I don't see it ever ending. Of course you have to make money to continue to make movies, but don't forget about a great story a great screenplay because ultimately that is why we all go to movies, to be entertained, to be engrossed and inspired. It seems in Hollywood when money is your main goal, more often than not, the movie is just plain bad.
Unfortunately Taken 3, which is supposed to the last movie in the Taken Franchise, wrecked the franchise because in my opinion that is how bad this movie was.

So what makes a great movie?
So what makes a great movie, a movie that you will always remember? For me, I remember the very bad and horrible movies almost as much as I do the great ones, which unfortunately are very few and far between.
A very rare instance of seeing two movies in a row, one very bad and one great happened yesterday when I saw one of the best movies I have ever seen right after seeing a very bad movie happened. I don't remember ever seeing two movies in a row before that were so different in quality.
The bad movie was the Interview, the controversial movie that was banned from theaters because of terrorist threats and even received some comments from the President of the United States. This movie was supposed to be a comedy and committed the cardinal sin of a comedy, it just wasn’t funny. There were grotesque scenes of human defecation after death, people biting other people's fingers off during fight scenes and a plot and most scenes which just made no sense at all. What a tragedy that a movie this bad, one of the worst I have ever seen has received so much publicity. What amazes me most is that a movie this bad could have been funded by Sony Pictures in the first place.
The great movie I saw yesterday was the incredible story of Alan Turing, who during World War 2, literally saved the day by inventing a machine that was able to break the German code and because of that one event, shortened the war by 2 years and save 14 million lives. Turing was gay and was able to keep the secret that he was gay for most of the time they were building the machine, but at the end of the war, his secret was revealed and he was forced by the British government to take hormone pills to try and change him to be heterosexual. Soon after this, he committed suicide at age only 41. Turning probably had Autism but his brilliance was profound enough to save the world. I thought the story about the hard work and frustration over a period of 2 years with a team of 8 people trying to break the code very compelling. The final break through when they finally figured out how to get their machine called Christopher to figure out the billions of combinations in a much shorter period of time was one of the best parts of this great movie.
So the question is what makes a great movie? In this case, the first thing you need is a great story, and this is one World War 2 story that should have been told many years ago because in my opinion, it’s the best story about that horrible war I have ever heard. For a great movie of course you also need great writing and acting and this movie has that as well. The Imitation Game will definitely be nominated for best picture for 2014 and if I was a member of the academy I would vote for this great movie to be the best picture of the year.

Self publishing a book / pros and cons
I am looking forward to have my 600+ page book printed in both soft cover and hard cover and I definitely made a good move by having just one copy printed first before I committed to a major printing. My book took me almost a full year to write and when I get it printed out, it has to look good before I commit to more copies.
I had a conversation with an executive of a book publishing company yesterday and he told me that self publishing is now a viable option to getting your work published bypassing all the things a writer had to do in the past to publish their work. On top of this there are many different packages for a great range of prices to get your book added to book web sites and then marketed. None of these decisions are easy ones, and for me I will make the decision to market my book next year after names are changed.
Writing my book this year has been very interesting and challenging and I have enjoyed most of the process but remembering all the bad things and bad people I have had to endure in my career in IT was not easy and I realized in a very big way that I have paid more than my share of dues in my chosen field.
Next year I will have to do a lot of research of all the companies that self publish books out there, to make sure that I get the best deal available.
